GLOSSARY

Cannabinoids & Hemp Science

Core hemp, CBD, CBG, THC and endocannabinoid-system terms used across CBD and CBG products.

CBD (Cannabidiol)

CBD is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in hemp. It is non-intoxicating and widely used in food supplement and wellness products.

CBG (Cannabigerol)

CBG is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in hemp. It is often described as a minor cannabinoid because it usually appears in smaller amounts than CBD.

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)

THC is the cannabinoid associated with intoxicating effects. UK-compliant CBD products must contain only permitted trace levels or non-detectable levels depending on product type.

CBDa

CBDa is the acidic precursor to CBD found naturally in raw hemp before heat or processing converts it into CBD.

CBGa

CBGa is an early-stage cannabinoid sometimes referred to as a precursor cannabinoid because other cannabinoids develop from it as the plant matures.

CBN

CBN is a minor cannabinoid that may appear in small amounts in hemp and cannabis-derived materials.

CBC

CBC is a minor cannabinoid found naturally in hemp and cannabis plants.

Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds found in hemp and cannabis plants. CBD, CBG and THC are examples.

Cannabis sativa

Cannabis sativa is the botanical species that includes both hemp and cannabis varieties. Hemp used for CBD products comes from Cannabis sativa plants grown for compliant industrial and extract purposes.

Industrial Hemp

Industrial hemp is Cannabis sativa cultivated for fibre, seed, food, cosmetic or extract uses, typically under strict controls on intoxicating cannabinoids.

Hemp Flower

Hemp flower is the flowering part of the hemp plant. It naturally contains cannabinoids, terpenes and plant compounds, but finished CBD products must still meet applicable UK rules.

CBD Extract

CBD extract is a hemp-derived extract containing cannabidiol. Depending on how it is made, it may also contain other cannabinoids, terpenes and plant compounds.

Cannabidiol Isolate

Cannabidiol isolate is the formal name for purified CBD isolate, a refined ingredient containing cannabidiol without additional cannabinoids or plant compounds.

Synthetic CBD

Synthetic CBD is cannabidiol made by chemical synthesis rather than extracted directly from hemp. It should still be considered carefully within applicable food, product-safety and compliance rules.

Controlled Cannabinoids

Controlled cannabinoids are cannabinoids controlled under UK drug legislation. THC and some related cannabinoids require particular care in product formulation, testing and compliance.

Exempt Product

An exempt product is a legal concept for certain preparations containing controlled substances only within strict limits and conditions. CBD products should be formulated and tested with this concept in mind.

Δ8-THC / Delta-8 THC

Delta-8 THC is a THC isomer associated with intoxicating effects and legal restrictions. It is not a standard wellness ingredient and should be treated as a controlled-risk cannabinoid term.

THCP / HHC

THCP and HHC are emerging cannabinoid terms that customers may see online. They should be treated cautiously because they may be intoxicating, restricted or unsuitable for standard CBD wellness products.

Cannabinoid Potency

Cannabinoid potency describes the measured strength or concentration of cannabinoids in a product, extract or lab sample.

Cannabinoid Content

Cannabinoid content is the amount of each cannabinoid present in a product, usually shown in milligrams, percentages or lab-report units.

Hemp

Hemp is a strain of Cannabis sativa grown for fibre, seed and cannabinoid extraction. It is the source plant used for many CBD products.

CBD Isolate

Full-Spectrum

Full-spectrum products contain a wider range of naturally occurring hemp compounds, including cannabinoids and terpenes, with trace THC where permitted.

Broad-Spectrum

Broad-spectrum products contain multiple hemp compounds but are processed to remove THC to non-detectable levels.
