CBD Product Formats
Common CBD and CBG product formats, usage terms and buying-language used across oils, gummies, vapes, patches, topicals and crystals.
CBD Oil
A liquid CBD format usually supplied with a dropper and commonly taken under the tongue or used according to product guidance.
CBG Oil
A liquid product format containing CBG, often supplied with a dropper and used according to product guidance.
CBD Gummies
Edible CBD products supplied in a pre-measured gummy format.
CBD Vape Liquid
A liquid designed for use in compatible vape devices.
CBD Topical / Topical CBD
An external-use CBD product, such as a cream, balm or lotion, intended for application to the skin. Classification and claims depend on the product’s composition, presentation and intended purpose.
CBD Dermal Patch
An adhesive external-use format applied to the skin for a controlled-release style product experience.
CBD Bath Bomb
A bath product infused with CBD and used as part of a bathing routine.
CBD Crystals
A highly purified CBD isolate format, often around 99% CBD, used for flexible measurement and formulation.
Capsules
A pre-measured oral format commonly used for supplements and mushroom products.
Tablets
A solid oral format made using active ingredients plus excipients such as binders, bulking agents or anti-caking agents.
Sublingual
Sublingual means placed under the tongue. This term is commonly used for oils and tinctures.
Oral CBD
Oral CBD refers to products swallowed or consumed by mouth, such as gummies, capsules or tablets.
Dermal
Dermal means relating to the skin. Dermal products are designed for external application.
Transdermal
Transdermal refers to delivery through the skin. This term should be used carefully and only where the product is designed and described that way.
Bioavailability
Bioavailability refers to how much of an ingredient is absorbed and made available to the body after use.
Onset Time
Onset time describes how long a product format may take to be absorbed or experienced. It varies by formulation and individual factors and should not be presented as a guaranteed effect time.
Serving Size
Serving size is the suggested amount of a product to use according to the label or product guidance.
Product Strength
Product strength describes how much active ingredient is contained in a product or serving.
CBD Strength
CBD strength refers to the total amount of CBD in a product or serving, usually shown in milligrams.
CBD Concentration
CBD concentration describes how much CBD is present relative to the total volume or weight of the product, often shown as a percentage or mg per ml.
CBD Per Serving
CBD per serving is the amount of CBD supplied in one suggested serving, such as one gummy, one tablet, one capsule or a measured amount of oil.
mg Per Drop
mg per drop estimates how many milligrams of CBD are delivered in each drop of CBD oil. It depends on the bottle strength, volume and drop size.
mg Per ml
mg per ml shows how many milligrams of CBD are present in each millilitre of liquid, making it easier to compare CBD oil strengths.
Pre-Measured Format
A pre-measured format provides a set amount per gummy, capsule, tablet or patch, making it easier to use consistently.
Tincture
Tincture is a traditional term often used for dropper-style liquid extracts, including CBD oils and similar liquid supplement formats.
CBD Drops
CBD drops are dropper-style CBD oil servings taken according to the product label or usage guidance.
Total CBD
Total CBD is the total amount of CBD in a product, usually shown in milligrams across the full bottle, pack or container.
Net Quantity
Net quantity is the amount of product in a pack, such as the volume of oil, number of gummies, number of tablets or total weight.
Water-Soluble CBD
Water-soluble CBD is CBD prepared in a format designed to mix more easily into water-based products such as drinks.
Nano CBD
Nano CBD refers to CBD prepared in very small particle or emulsion formats. It should be described carefully and supported by suitable formulation and quality information.
Liposomal CBD
Liposomal CBD refers to CBD carried in lipid-based vesicles or similar delivery systems designed to support dispersion or formulation.
Emulsifier
An emulsifier helps oil-based and water-based ingredients mix more evenly in products such as drinks, creams or emulsions.
First-Pass Metabolism
First-pass metabolism describes the process where swallowed ingredients pass through the digestive system and liver before reaching wider circulation.
Absorption Rate
Absorption rate refers to how quickly an ingredient is taken up after use, depending on product format, formulation and individual factors.
Controlled Release
Controlled release describes a product design intended to release ingredients gradually over a defined period.
Slow Release
Slow release describes a format designed to release ingredients more gradually than an immediate-release format.
Terpenes, Flavour & Plant Compounds
Terpenes and related plant compounds influence aroma, flavour and overall product profile in terpene-infused CBD crystals, oils and vape liquids.
Terpenes
Terpenes are naturally occurring aromatic compounds found in many plants, including hemp. They are responsible for scent and flavour profiles.
Myrcene
Myrcene is commonly associated with earthy, herbal aromas and is found in a variety of terpene blends.
Limonene
Limonene is typically linked to citrus-forward aroma profiles.
Pinene
Pinene is associated with fresh, pine-like notes.
Linalool
Linalool is often associated with floral, lavender-like aromas.
Caryophyllene
Caryophyllene is commonly described as spicy or peppery in aroma.
Terpene Blend
A terpene system added to some CBD and CBG products for aroma and flavour.
Flavour Profile
Flavour profile refers to the overall taste and aroma character of a product, often shaped by its terpene blend.
Entourage Effect
The entourage effect describes the idea that cannabinoids, terpenes and other plant compounds may work together within a hemp-derived product profile.
Flavonoids
Flavonoids are naturally occurring plant compounds that contribute to colour, taste and plant chemistry.
Fatty Acids
Fatty acids are naturally occurring compounds found in some oils and plant-based ingredients.
Plant Waxes
Plant waxes are natural waxy compounds present in plant material and sometimes removed during refinement.
Phytochemicals
Phytochemicals are naturally occurring plant compounds, including cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids.
Whole-Plant Extract
Whole-plant extract refers to an extract designed to retain a wider profile of naturally occurring plant compounds.

CBD Vape Terms
Vape-related terms used across CBD and CBG e-liquids, Skull Bomb, Botanicals, booster shots and device guidance.
CBD E-Liquid
A liquid intended only for use in a compatible vape device. CBD e-liquids may contain cannabinoid ingredients, PG, VG and flavourings; they must not be swallowed and require product-specific assessment under vape, product-safety and controlled-drug rules.
CBG Booster Shot
A booster format containing CBG, designed to be added to compatible vape liquid according to product guidance.
CBD Booster Shot
A booster format containing CBD, designed to be added to compatible vape liquid according to product guidance.
PG (Propylene Glycol)
PG is a common base ingredient in vape liquids that helps carry flavour and cannabinoid content.
VG (Vegetable Glycerine)
VG is a common base ingredient used in vape liquids to influence viscosity and vapour production.
PG/VG Ratio
PG/VG ratio describes the balance between propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine in a vape liquid.
High-PG Liquid
High-PG liquid is usually thinner and often suited to lower-power or mouth-to-lung devices.
High-VG Liquid
High-VG liquid is usually thicker and often associated with higher vapour production.
Nicotine-Free
Nicotine-free means no nicotine is intentionally included and the label states 0 mg nicotine. It does not mean the product is exempt from all vape, device, age-of-sale, environmental, product-safety or controlled-drug requirements.
MTL (Mouth-To-Lung)
MTL is a vaping style often used with lower-power devices and higher-PG liquids.
DTL (Direct-To-Lung)
DTL is a vaping style often associated with higher-power devices and higher-VG liquids.
Sub-Ohm
Sub-ohm vaping uses lower-resistance coils and higher-power devices. Product compatibility should always be checked.
Coil
A coil is the heating element inside a vape device that vaporises e-liquid.
Wattage
Wattage refers to the power setting of a vape device.
Shortfill
A shortfill is a larger bottle of vape liquid with space left for adding a compatible booster or shot.
Booster Shot
A booster shot is a concentrated add-in product designed to be mixed with a compatible e-liquid.
Refillable Device
A refillable vape device is designed to be filled with compatible e-liquid by the user.

TRPR / “TPD Compliant”
TRPR refers to the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016, as amended. “TPD compliant” is older shorthand based on the EU Tobacco Products Directive and should not be used as a blanket claim that a product meets every UK legal requirement.
0mg Nicotine
0 mg nicotine means the product is formulated without nicotine. Notification and labelling duties can differ from nicotine-containing products, but other legal requirements may still apply.
10ml CBD E-Liquid
10ml CBD e-liquid is a small bottle format commonly used for CBD vape liquids and compatible refillable vape devices.
CBD Vape Pen
A CBD vape pen is a portable vape device used with compatible CBD vape liquid or cartridges.
510 Thread Battery
A 510 thread battery is a common vape battery type used with compatible 510-thread cartridges or tanks.
Pod System
A pod system is a compact vape device that uses replaceable or refillable pods.
Viscosity
Viscosity describes how thick or thin a liquid is, which can affect compatibility with vape devices, coils and pods.
Part 6 TRPR
Part 6 of the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016 contains key UK rules for e-cigarettes and refill containers. The precise duties depend on the product, nicotine content, market and business role.
MHRA Vape Notification
The MHRA operates the notification scheme for nicotine-containing e-cigarettes and refill containers in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Whether a particular CBD or 0 mg product requires notification must be assessed against current product-specific guidance.
Notified and Published Vape Product
A product shown on the MHRA published list has passed through the applicable notification process. Publication is not a general approval, endorsement or confirmation that every other legal requirement has been met.
Great Britain Vape Notification
Producers placing products on the Great Britain market use the domestic MHRA notification system where notification is required.
EU-CEG / Northern Ireland Notification
Producers placing relevant products on the Northern Ireland market use the EU Common Entry Gate notification route. Northern Ireland and Great Britain requirements should be checked separately.
Producer, Importer and Rebrander
For TRPR purposes, a producer can include a manufacturer, importer or business that rebrands a product as its own. A retailer may also become a producer if its activities meet the definition.
Non-Nicotine / 0 mg Scope
MHRA notification requirements principally concern nicotine-containing products, but 0 mg and CBD vape products can still fall within device, labelling, general product-safety, environmental, controlled-drug and other rules. Scope should be checked product by product.
Emissions Testing
Emissions testing measures substances released in the aerosol generated by a vape product under defined conditions. The protocol, device settings and analytical method should be stated when results are used for compliance or safety evidence.
Vape Vigilance
Vape vigilance means monitoring, recording and reporting product safety concerns or adverse incidents, and taking corrective action where required.
Single-Use Vape Ban
It has been illegal for UK businesses to sell or supply single-use vapes since 1 June 2025. The ban applies whether or not a device contains nicotine; a reusable product must meet the applicable refillability and rechargeability criteria.
Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026
The Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 creates a framework for further controls on the supply, licensing, registration, presentation and promotion of vapes and related products. Many measures depend on commencement provisions or later regulations, so current implementation guidance must be checked.
